Alam has covered the entire gamut of music starting from classical to devotional and from folk to modern, and is also a much sought after artist on Doordarshan’s national hook-up as well as the All India Radio. In the year 1957, Alam got a chance to represent oDishA at the All India Youth Festival in Delhi along with some of the young talents of that time who became later year super singers like Pranab Pattanaik, Akshaya Mohanty, etc., after returning back he sat for an audition test for AIR, Cuttack and qualified. On 16th June 1957, Alam Bhai recorded his first song “naabik! dekh hawa badli…” (a Hindi Geet) for the AIR, Cuttack. Alam Bhai started his film career as a play back singer with the song “Aarata sure bare kare minatire…” in the movie “Laxmi” (1960-61) under the music direction of Balakrushna Dash and the lyricist was Sri Sarada Prasanna Nayak, where the song is still an old favorite among listeners. Alam Bhai has been singing for HMV Company since 1964.
Apart from that, Sri Alam is an ‘A’-grade artist and an approved music composer for All India Radio, Cuttack and DDK, Bhubaneswar. However, Sikandar Alam continued to sing and his songs have only gained more popularity with each passing day. He has added another dignity to his credit by rendering his voice for some of the oDiA version of Rabindra Sangeet by AIR, Cuttack. He has scored music for national award winning documentary films including, “Agricultural Implements”, “Tribal Crops” and “For a Better Living”. For the first time on 21st July 1970, the BBC, London, broadcast an oDiA Folk song in its Bharat Darshan Programme and the rarest honour has gone to Sri Sikandar Alam. Besides movies and devotional songs, he has sung many Gjazals also that are very peaceful to hear. Alam’s Ghazals recorded on special occasions have been put to National Telecast in the year 1987-88.
In the year 1957, Md. Sikandar Alam sang Salabega’s lyrics for the first time. From that day on wards he has sung more than 1500 bhajanas, which is itself a great achievement for any non-Hindu artist. For his lifelong contribution towards national integration, the Delhi Doordarshan Kendra signed him to sing for the documentary film on ‘Salabega’ named “Hamaari Paramparaa” in the year 1991, where the songs “Kene gheni jaauchh…”, “Shrikrushna ra bansi swona…” and “jagabandhu he…” recorded at the Ganesh temple at Khandagiri, Bhubaneswar have become a brightest example of universal brotherhood. His Jayadev Slokas are already legion and find pride of place in AIR, Cuttack’s library.
Recently Alam has completed his tenure as the Vice President of the OdishA Sangeet Nataka Academy. He is also one of the juries in the Local Audition Board of All India Radio and DDK.
In a career spanning nearly half a century, Sikandar Alam has walked the oDiA Music scene like a colossus. There was and will be none who could produce the same kind of magic he did.
