Geeta made her playback debut in 1970 with the film Adina Megha under the music direction of the legend Akshaya Mohanty at a tender age of sixteen while she had yet to finish her matriculation and the song was “Ei Aamari Gaan”. After “Adina Megha” there was no turning back. In the same year on 3rd July, Geeta was approved as the B’ Grade Artist and began singing for AIR, Cuttack. The song Bijane Bajaai Benu (1970), composed by Akshaya Mohanty was her first recording for AIR. Then she rendered “Mantra Hina Kriya Hina”- a Balakrushna Dash composition for AIR, which has become one of the all time favorite prayer songs among all school children of oDishA. All through the 1970s Geeta kept singing in films and AIR. From 31st October 1994 she was recognized as “A-Grade” Artist for AIR and DD.

In the year 1971, Geeta recorded her first modern album for HMV under the musicdirection of Akshaya Mohanty where the songs, Mana Mora Padma Patra Sama and Paradesiare Bharasa Nahin were turned her into a star overnight and went on to become a pop hit. It was in the film Ta’poi that she got her breakthrough with the song that was to become an oDiA classic Aa Baula Bohu Bohukaa Khela Khelibaa. Her songs Phur Kina Udigala Bani (a duet song with Trupti Das) & Jautuka Naba Chadhaa are also rocking the air even today. She received her first State Film Award for the film Ashanta Graha(1984). She also recorded a popular drama, Patent Medicine, under the music direction of Akshaya Mohanty which went on to win the best radio drama award from All India Radio.

Geeta has covered the entire gamut of music starting from classical to devotional and from folk to modern, and is also a much sought after artist on Doordarshan’s national hook-up as well as the All India Radio. Besides oDiA movies and devotional songs, she has sung many Gjazals and Geets in Hindi language also. Geeta’s Ghazals recorded on special occasions have been put to National Telecast. She has also performed in various musical programs at Washington DC, New Jersey (USA), San Francisco, New York, North Carolina, and Merry Land, etc.

Her career spanned for more than two decades. Her most recent recordings are Kalia Kanhaa a Bhajana Album by the composer Om Prakash Mohanty and “Kemiti Kahibi” a modern album directed by Prem Anand.

She is also one of the juries in the Local Audition Board of All India Radio and DDK. Currently she is residing in Cuttack with her husband and has engaged herself more as an AIR/TV artist along with recordings for Music Albums and stage performances.
