Born to Mr. Bichitananda Mohanty and Mrs. Subarna Manjari Mohanty, at Cuttack. Akshaya was the youngest in the Mohanty family, preceded by sisters Sulakshyana & Asalata, and his elder sister Sulakshyana was a popular singer too. He married in 1967 to Mrs. Prabina Mohanty and blessed with two sons (Mitrabhanu & Chitrabhanu) and two daughters.
Akshaya had his primary education in a boarding school at (now it has become a women training institute). Then he joined Mission School (now Christ Collegiate School) and his finished his matriculation there. He was also a brilliant student. After Christ School, Akshaya joined Stewart College as a student of I.Sc. He also started to show interest in music and often mimicked the song “O duniya ke rakhwale…” from the film “Baiju Bawara” of great Md. Rafi and acknowledged by friends as a singer. Though he did not have any formal training in music, he decided to pursue it, since he could not able to become a player due to his parent’s financial crises. Then it was his dream to become a famous playback singer and be counted among legends. Then Akshaya joined Ravenshaw College, where he got a chance to perform on the occasion of College Dramatic Function. After completion of BA, he joined Madhusudan Law College of Cuttack as a student of Law and there he got a lot of chances to pursue his musical journey. In this period he joined National Music Association and became a disciple of the great maestro Khitish Chandra Maitra and started learning classical music.
In the year 1956 Akshaya represented Utkal University at the All India Youth Festival in Delhi along with some of the young talents of that time who became later year super singers like Pranab Pattanaik, Md. Sikandar Allam etc. ODishA won the first prize in that competition and oDiA music find a chance to be recognized.

Akshay Mahanty was such a nice and talented musician and personality, Orissa would ever have in future. He along with Biju babu was very unfortunate to take birth in Orissa. Had they taken birth in any other state, their capability would have been showcased much better in national scenario. Good thing is that Orissa is very proud of both the personalities. Lastly special thanks to Odiamusic for contributing more and more to keep non resident Odias to keep abreast with our culture. Thanks. Vande Utkala Janani

Akshaya Mohanty – A very glamorous name in the field of Oriya Music as well as Oriya Movie. He was well established in Music and Literature, enriched with the then social consciousness and empowered with high experience and deep thought. So he was a lyricist by his powerful feelings, a singer by his deep emotions, music director by his extraordinary mastered mind, Fictionist and Novelist by his profound skill and above all he was a great lover of his own mother city, Katak. Due to that reason, in all his works the very famous Kataki Style was reflected. Till now his memory occupies as an everlasting position in the field of music among the contemporary youth mass.
Akshaya Mohanty, the most evergreen figure of the musical as well as literary field of the time.
Thanks.
